Announcing the recipients of the first round of Local Film Festival Challenge Fund 2019 and deadline for the next round.
We are delighted to announce that eight organisations are the recipients of Local Film Festival Challenge Funding. In December 2018, we received fourteen applications to the fund, all of a high standard, and a panel convened to decide on the award of funding. The panel comprised Robert Livingston from Regional Screen Scotland, Louise Acheson from Screen Scotland, Sambrooke Scott and Georgia Stride from Film Hub Scotland and Catharine Des Forges from Independent Cinema Office.
The fund recipients are:
Carrick Cinema Club in Maybole, delivering their first film festival, taking place in the Autumn at the Carrick Centre, with the theme ‘Around the World in Eight Films’ and featuring locally produced food to compliment each screening.
Kelty Community Cinema who will deliver their inaugural Kelty Film Festival from 24 – 26 May, screening a selection of Scottish and international titles.
Ideas Link, to deliver the first Killearn Movie Hoolie to take place in Killearn and Balfron, featuring screenings of feature and short films for all ages, filmmaking workshops for 13-15 year olds and a Ceilidh.
Friends of the Broadway Prestwick, who held the first Prestwick Film Festival from 15-18 March, and screened a broad programme of films including The Greatest Showman, Kubo and the Two Strings, Cinema Paradiso, From Scotland with Love and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Alchemy Film & Arts in Hawick for Film Town, a community-oriented creative learning programme focusing on Community Filmmaking initiatives and screenings of locally-made films, working with partners and participants in Hawick.
Southside Film Festival, to develop a strand of Roma films in their June festival (7th – 9th), programmed by and for the local Roma community, in partnership with Romano Lav.
Stoneyburn and Bents Future Vision Group for the pilot edition of the Breich Valley Film Festival, a one-day festival taking place at Stoneyburn Football Park, with screenings and workshops for all the family.
UK Asian Film Festival, to extend their annual festival to Scotland, for screenings at Edinburgh Filmhouse, Glasgow Women’s Library, Glasgow Film Theatre, University of Glasgow, and the Scotland Street Museum, Glasgow taking place 27 March – 4 May.

“Friends of the Broadway Prestwick cannot thank Regional Screen Scotland enough for the support they have given us through the Local Film Festivals Challenge Fund. The funding has allowed us to both forward our objectives as a group and, more importantly, bring our community together with cinema screenings. The response within Prestwick to the Film Festival has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re very grateful to Regional Screen Scotland for their support and guidance throughout which has allowed this to happen.”
Karen O’Hare, Director of Southside Film Festival said:
“This funding has allowed Southside Film Festival CIC to work in partnership with Romano Lav, a Roma organisation in Govanhill, Southside Glasgow, to programme and curate a celebration of Roma cinema, music and food as part of Southside Film Festival in June. This event will serve as the launch of a stand alone Roma film festival in the Govanhill area of Glasgow in August, which will be the first of its kind in Scotland and the UK. It has enabled Southside Film to carry out workshops with the Romano Lav youth group to equip them with the necessary skills to run the film festival later in the year, ranging from programming and logistics to technical training. “
Further Funding:
The next round of the Local Film Festival Challenge Fund is open, again with awards of up to £5,000. For this round, we have revised the process a little in response to the experience of supporting the current group of recipients.

There is no application form, but applicants should follow the guidelines for what information to include, and complete a budget overview using the template provided. Harriet can provide feedback on draft applications, if they are received by 9am on Monday 10 June. The final deadline for this funding round is then 5pm, 1 July 2019 and successful applicants will be informed within two weeks.
